Obverse Design: Features a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, used from 1938 until 2004.
Composition: The standard composition is 75% copper and 25% nickel. However, nickels minted from mid-1942 to 1945 ("War Nickels") were made of an alloy containing 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese to conserve nickel for the war effort.
Motto: "IN GOD WE TRUST" has appeared on most U.S. coins since the Civil War and has been required on all coins since 1938.
Error Feature: The incomplete inscription "TRUST" is an example of an error that occurs when the coin blank (planchet) is struck off-center or is misaligned during the minting process.
